How do stiffening agents work?
Stiffening agents are usually an emulsion or solution of a high-molecular-weight polymer (such as modified starch, polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylate, etc.).
The principle of their action can be simply understood as:
Film-forming effect: A transparent film is formed on the surface of the fabric fibers. This film "binds" the fibers together, restricting the relative movement of the fibers, thereby increasing the rigidity and thickness of the fabric.
Crosslinking effect: Some reactive stiffening agents can also undergo crosslinking reactions with the fiber molecules, thereby achieving a more lasting effect.
